title is a quote from a pablo neruda poem entitled "poetry" |
i decided to delve into the roots of 420 and after finding many a myth about it being the californian police code for “marijuana smoking in progress” i believe i found the true origin. my reputable source being the huffington post. not wikiepdia or urban dictionary.
as many of you hopefully know, 420 is jargon for pot smoking, basically. after clearing that up, let’s continue. to make a really long story short enough for all of those with short attention spans (a side effect of hitting the devil’s lettuce too much), it began with a group of counter-culture rebels called the waldo’s. the waldo’s were three boys and an older brother who hung out by a wall by there school in marin country california, they had heard of a coast guard officer who, sadly, couldn’t upkeep his large marijuana crop anymore. without a map or really any idea of where the crop was (besides the basic idea that it was in a hidden clearing) they began to search. every day for most of their junior and senior years the boys would meet at 4:20 after school to promptly smoke a few joints and wander the forests of california for the el dorado of pot. (quick side note, el dorado was a mythical city of gold that the europeans never could find, because there was no map. clever allusion, no?) after two years of smoking and searching, the boys forgot about their quest or gave up (the details get hazy there, probably because of that damn reefer). one of the waldo’s boys father though, was the true spreader of the term. although 420 had become popular at marin county high, it hadn’t quite become so mainstream. the nameless father, shall we call him bud, was the manager of no other than the grateful dead. after the waldo’s befriended the grateful dead and began to go to their practices to light up, the band members caught onto referencing anything to do with their little green friend as 420. one thing led to another and soon the grateful dead’s underground following had also caught on. it multiplied and spread soon with everyone celebrating this counter culture holiday.
so friends, after that lengthy story i hope you all have a peaceful and happy tomorrow.
